Sebastian Alvarez: I would say, I don't remember who said this, but I read it on a tweet saying that the code was not the bottleneck. It's not about writing the code. It's to actually write the proper code, or to solve the problem actually. The proper solution. I think that the main problem now, even now with AI, is that we're writing too much code that nobody cares about.
So first of all, you cannot fire everyone because you must still run whatever you have built. And not every piece of code can be managed by AI properly. And I've been beaten by this. So this is the first reason.
And then I think that the same team that you have, with AI, can help you build a better product, because you're having more hands to define properly, to think properly, to build properly. Like the front end engineers that you have in your team, if you give them AI, maybe they can get closer to the customer and become closer to designers. And you can tap on the design skills and iterate faster on how your product looks. Your back-end engineers can allow the full stack engineers to prototype faster, and then your backend engineers can go and sweep and clean the code that the AI is writing.
So it's not about replacing, it's about teaching them how to do better and forget a little bit about how to write the code, and worry about the architecture and the quality of what you're writing, but let the AI write it.
I remember when I went from developer to manager, I had to transition from that when our team grew. People were asking me, do you regret moving from developer to manager? And I was like, well, sometimes I want to code more, but what I had to learn is how to code with somebody else's hands. So my goal was, how do I convince this person to code what I'm thinking? And I think with AI it's the same thing. How do I convince this AI to write what I'm thinking? But it does it like a million times faster than me.
