When you're hiring people all over the world, you're dealing with all sorts of cultural frictions and things you're not going to understand until you do understand them. Wherever you're hiring people, if it's in the Philippines or Egypt, Latin America, Russia, wherever it is, understand the culture and some of those nuances. Because more often than not, those stereotypes are true of the people that you're dealing with. Humans are very different from one country and culture to another. Matthew Mottola: I did a program in China, and the professors were like, the toughest part for us is that the students aren't engaged. They're not asking questions, they don't seem engaged. Yet these students go home and they study for five hours. So they are extremely engaged. Versus the American who is studying for maybe 30 minutes. But the difference is they're pestering the professor with questions. Over there it was seen as not respectful to show up my professor by asking a question in front of other people. If I'm not having structured one-on-ones, my Asian employee will not tell me what's wrong. Literally they will not.
