Looking for some light reading or listening this weekend? Here is where we would start. This week on the Human Cloud Podcast Turning the Team He Hired Into the Company He Sold Michael Bassin co-founded Talent Sam, replaced nearly his entire team with South African talent, and sold the company to Simera. Not to cut costs. The work was better. This week Matthew sat down with him to find out how a great remote team became a company worth acquiring.
Michael did not pick South Africa from a spreadsheet. He staffed his cold email agency across Mexico, the Philippines, India, South Africa, and the UK, and over a few years the South Africans won on quality. His read is structural. The currency fell, but the education, the work culture, and the native English did not. He rates their customer service culture above the United States for support and de-escalation work. The second half of the story is what made it a company. To truly help companies realize that workforce, Michael had to invest in the compliance and support layer. The best people would not take the work as freelancers, so Talent Sam opened a local entity, shipped computers to people's homes, ran real HR, and got payroll, tax, and compliance down to the press of a button. That layer turned a great team into a complete remote hiring solution, and it is what Simera acquired in 2026. For every solution reading this, that is the lesson. A great talent pool is the start. The infrastructure that lets a company actually use it is what gets you bought.

The 2026 Flexible Workforce Study Is LiveWe just kicked off the largest research study focused exclusively on the flexible workforce. Two surveys, two sides of the same market. Companies answer one, solutions answer the other, and we publish them together. The early results already tell a story. 51% of companies expect to increase their use of independent talent over the next three years. Only 29% have a formal policy for engaging it. Demand is growing faster than the programs built to manage it.
Take the solution survey and you see the results before they are published anywhere else. Take the survey »Buyers, take this survey instead »
